SILVERWOOD draws its strength from
its members’ diverse backgrounds, playing a variety of musical styles,
including classical, popular, Celtic, jazz, and other international styles.
The group performs throughout southern California. At the Los Angeles
Museum of Art they played as part of a Russian-Jewish music presentation
for the exhibition of the works of Mark Chagal. In May of 1998, SilverWood
was featured as the Irish band providing entertainment preceding a performance
of "Riverdance" in the San Diego Civic Theatre. The following June
they presented Scottish music for the Scottish Highland Games festival
in Vista. The band performed with the San Diego Repertory Theatre
in their 1997-1999 productions of "A Christmas Carol." SilverWood
has given live TV performances on KUSI, KFMB, and NBC; and they have appeared
live on KFMB radio. Their music has also been aired on KPBS radio.

MICHAEL BALLARD (bodhran, bones,
spoons) has a background of dance plus instrumental and choral music.
He has been a regular performer at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire and other
similar events. He was a volunteer and then a staff member, for a
total of nine years, at the Summer Solstice Traditional Dance, Music, and
Story-telling Festival. His percussion has appeared on four albums
by three different artists, live programs with Glenn Morgan (Celtic), Scottish
Fiddlers of Los Angeles (classical, Scottish), and Clancy Dunn (Aussie),
and other events ranging from Klezmer to mariachi to rock and roll.
MICHAEL FENICK (mandolin, guitar,
banjo) played guitar and banjo for the Drama Desk award-winning musical
"Floyd Collins," in its 1999 production at the Old Globe Theatre in San
Diego. The previous year he performed in the Broadway tour production
of "Chicago" at the Civic Theatre in San Diego. For seven years he
was a member of the popular sextet Mandolin Madness, for which two of his
compositions are featured on the group’s recording. Mike has won
first place in the Temecula Valley Mandolin Contest and the Julian flatpick
contest. He studied classical guitar with Fred Benedetti and Robert
Wetzel.
ROBERT SANDSTROM (violin).
Bob’s formal studies in violin have afforded him the opportunity of playing
with various symphonies and chamber music and theatre orchestras.
But he’s equally at home playing rousing fiddle tunes for folk groups.
Bob presents a diverse repertoire of music—classical, Irish, bluegrass,
romantic ballads, Broadway and motion pictures, and Baroque.
"Music," he remarks, "is a wonderful thing! It has provided me years
of enjoyment while performing in some remarkable locations and meeting
very nice people."
GARY TUTTLE (acoustic guitars) provided
period music for Octad One’s production of "Much Ado About Nothing."
He brings 30 years’ performance experience to SilverWood, including many
appearances as part of the guitar duo Cedar and Rosewood. Gary teaches
guitar privately to college students and the general public. He studied
with Celin Romero of The Romeros and performed in master classes with Pepe
Romero, Frederick Noad, Christopher Parkening, and Manuel Barrueco.
DIANE WILSON (flute, piccolo) is the
principle flutist and a featured soloist of the San Diego Concert Band.
She has also performed with several orchestras, including the La Jolla
Civic Orchestra and the Grossmont Symphony Orchestra. Having studied
under San Diego Symphony’s principal flutist Damian Bursill-Hall, and also
under Judith Bentley, student of the late William Kincaid, Diane is a private
flute instructor for students of all ages.
